Online Backups

(Back your computer up to a server on the internet!)

There is much debate today regarding "online" backups.  And that debate centers around security.  The question is: Are online backups safe and secure?  Answer: That depends on who you talk to.

So, the next question is:  Should you do it?  The answer depends on a few questions....

  • Question:  Are you going to backup financial data?  (banking, stocks, 401k...)

  • Answer:  Nope.  I wouldn't do it!

  • Question:  Is there other information on your computer that you wouldn't want other's to see?

  • Answer:  Would it bother you if someone got a hold of all your contacts?  What about all the pictures on your computer?  What about word and excel documents?  What about your emails or calendar?  If the thought of someone getting a hold of those things bother's you...don't backup to the internet!

  • Question:  Is my data secure?

  • Answer:  Yes!  Here are a few articles regarding online backup security:
    Inc. Technology or
    Information Week

I have started backing up to the internet.  There are 2 sites I like.

www.mozy.com (free if you only want to back up 2 gb or less, $4.95/mo for unlimited space)

www.carbonite.com ($50/year for unlimited space)

I backup my notebook to carbonite.com, and my wife's computer to mozy.com.  Which one do I like the best?  Carbonite!

You might want to check back often and see what I think given a little time.... One thing I can tell you...I will still back up my computer to a USB Hard Drive!

Have you got an online backup site you like?  Send it to me!
